South West England Region Moth Distribution Maps to 2021,
with data for Gloucestershire and Wiltshire to 2023
The maps and charts produced by this page use the following sets of record data:
For more details of the map information (e.g. national scarcity and record verification
ratings), see the main version of the page
which is designed for viewing on a computer screen.
To select a species on this version, choose Common or Scientific name,
then enter at least 3 characters on the keypad to see the number of matches
(this is shown in large red numerals at the top right of the page).
Enter more characters to reduce the number of matches if appropriate,
then select the species from the drop-down list of matches. You can limit the
matches to micros or macros rather than both.
The checklist number and species name (scientific for micros, common name for macros)
are shown just above the species map.
After viewing the map for one of the matches you can select another match,
and you can re-select any of the last 10 selections from the Recent list.
The species density map is always available at the bottom of this list.
An alternative way to select a species map is to choose the Species list option.
The keypad is replaced by a scrollable list of species names. The position in the list
can be changed by small fixed amounts as indicated, or by tapping anywhere on the 'snake' bar
(on a computer the position on this can be set by clicking and also by dragging). The coloured
background along the snake changes to show some of the family boundaries in the list and there
are tick marks at the start of each family.
Tapping anywhere on, above or below the snake's solid horizontal bar sections selects a position
on a horizontal section. Tapping anywhere outside this area selects a position on a vertical section.
Only positions on the solid sections of the snake correspond to species in the list.
Touching the snake area on a phone screen to scroll or zoom the display does not set the snake value
on the Android phone used to test this feature.
Tap on any of the species in the list to select its map. The top entry in the list is also shown
below the snake in a larger font, with scientific name only for micros and common name only
for macros. Tapping on this entry will also select its map.
The sounds checkbox controls the beep on most touch-screen input (there is no beep when
the snake value is set).
You can choose 4 types of species display:
-- tetrad (2Km) scale distribution map (in those areas where 2Km data was available)
-- 10Km scale distribution map
-- 10Km scale map of number of years recorded since 1990
-- chart showing times of year recorded and numbers of records since 1990
The years period covered by the 2Km or 10Km distribution map is selectable.
The VCs checkbox controls whether the vice-county boundaries are shown on the map.
<2, <1, 1>, 2> changes position in the species list by the indicated amount.
Top moves to the top of the page.
The box below the map/chart shows typical larval food(s) in the UK,
and species verification comments (if any).
The VC boundary data and the UK map from which the underlying
region map was produced are covered by the Ordnance Survey Open Data Licence,
contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights (2003, 2022).
These maps are produced by a volunteer member of Butterfly Conservation, Gloucestershire Branch.
There is no guarantee of complete accuracy in terms of the species recorded, their locations and dates.
The known difficulties of accurate identification in some species groups means that
some errors are highly likely in maps and charts derived from millions of records.
When errors or uncertain records are identified and removed from any of the source datasets,
these maps might not necessarily be corrected for a long time, or not at all if the revised datasets are not
supplied/available to enable this.
Even in areas where large quantities of reasonably up to date records were available there is
no guarantee of completeness of distribution displays.
With records taken from several sources some records may be duplicates, affecting the values shown
on the time of year charts, although the data was pre-processed to detect and ignore possible duplicates.
